3 Greyhound Athletes were named Athletes of the Year, 2017 by BC Athletics.

Marvin Johnson – Male Masters Track Athlete of the Year

Marvin broke the BC Masters Indoor records in the M40 200m and 400m and the Outdoor record while running on a 4x100m relay team. At the CMA/NCCWMA Championships, Marvin defeated some of the top American M40 sprinters while winning the 100m and 400m. He is ranked #1 in Canada in these events. Marvin's 400m time of 51.34 is #2 all-time in BC and for 2017 ranks him #12 in the world for M40-44.

Christa Bortignon – Female Masters Athlete of the Year

Christa won 6 gold medals at the WMA Championships in track at Daegu, South Korea, including golds in the 60m, 200m and 400m. At the CMA/NCCWMA Championships, Christa won gold in the W80 100m and 200m. She broke 7 W80 Canadian records on the track, including the Indoor records in the 50m, 60m, 200m and 400m, and the Outdoor records in the 100m, 200m and 200m hurdles. For the 2017 WMA Rankings, Christa is ranked #1 in the world in 7 track events, 4 Indoors and 3 Outdoors in W80.

In Field, at the World Masters Championships in Daegu, South Korea, Christa broke world records in the W80 long jump and triple jump, winning the gold medal in these events as well as in the shot put. She broke the long and triple jump world records again at the Canadian and BC Indoor Championships. Christa added the Outdoor world records in the W80 long jump and triple jump while winning gold at the CMA/NCCWMA Championships. For the 2017 track and field season, Christa broke a total of 4 world records and 12 Canadian records.

Reidar Zapf-Gilje - Male Masters Field Athlete of the Year

Reidar is a multi-talented athlete who competed in 18 different track and field events in 2017 and was ranked #1 in Canada in 13 of these events for M65-69.  He broke 9 BC and 2 Canadian records.  His Canadian record in the Pentathlon ranks him #1 in the world for M65-69.  He is also ranked #2 in the world in the 2000m Steeplechase and 800m.  Three of his BC records were in the triple jump, weight throw and throws pentathlon.  Reidar excelled in all 4 jumping events and all 5 throwing events.  At the CMA/NCCWMA Championships, Reidar won 8 gold medals in M65-69.
